Elon Musk's Neurotech Company Responds to Allegations of Animal Abuse

Neuralink, a neurotechnology company funded by Elon Musk that is developing implantable chips designed to connect the human brain to artificial intelligence via computers, is facing serious allegations of animal abuse. The abuse reportedly happened while Neuralink was testing the devices on monkeys.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture against the University of California, Davis, where the experiments using the primates took place. The complaint claims there were violations of the Animal Welfare Act on 23 monkeys.

The nearly 600-page complaint alleges in gruesome detail that the monkeys were not given proper veterinary or psychological care prior to or following the experiments; were killed after the injection of a non-approved substance that destroyed their brains; and suffered seizures, facial traumas, neglect and even euthanasia and death.

Musk’s Neuralink donated an estimated $1.4 million to UC Davis’ California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) to conduct the experiments, partnering with the facility from 2017 to 2020 before building its own facilities.

“UC Davis may have handed over its publicly-funded facilities to a billionaire, but that doesn’t mean it can evade transparency requirements and violate federal animal welfare laws,” Jeremy Beckham, research advocacy coordinator with the Physicians Committee, said in a statement. “The documents reveal that monkeys had their brains mutilated in shoddy experiments and were left to suffer and die. It’s no mystery why Elon Musk and the university want to keep photos and videos of this horrific abuse hidden from the public.”

However, Neuralink and Musk are fighting back against the allegations, insisting that the company is “absolutely committed to working with animals in the most humane and ethical way possible,” and noting that it is a “privilege to work with animals in research.”

A lengthy post, penned on Neuralink’s website, explains that six animals were euthanized due to infections and complications at the advice of the university's veterinary staff. Another two were euthanized “at planned end dates to gather important histological data.”

“All animal work done at UC Davis was approved by their Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) as mandated by Federal law, and all medical and post-surgical support, including endpoint decisions were overseen by their dedicated and skilled veterinary staff,” Neuralink said. “While the facilities and care at UC Davis did and continue to meet federally mandated standards, we absolutely wanted to improve upon these standards as we transitioned animals to our in-house facilities.”

According to the company's post, the new facilities include a 6,000-square-foot vivarium to house the animals, which is designed to "prioritize their needs." This includes more humane methods of motivating and tracking animals’ activity and preferences, above-standard diet plans, a team of socialization and behavioral specialists and the commitment to not use animal restraints.

“If animals must be used in research in the meantime, their lives and experiences should be as vital and naturalistic as possible,” Neuralink wrote. “It is our responsibility as caretakers to ensure that their experience is as peaceful and frankly, as joyful as possible.”

In December, Musk said in an interview at The Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council Summit that he hopes to begin implanting the chips in humans sometime this year.

“Neuralink's working well in monkeys, and we're actually doing just a lot of testing and just confirming that it's very safe and reliable, and the Neuralink device can be removed safely,” he said at the time. "We hope to have this in our first humans — which will be people that have severe spinal-cord injuries like tetraplegics, quadriplegics — next year, pending FDA approval.

So far, the company has seen success in a monkey named Page, who was seen playing interactive games with its mind in a viral video last April.

Resolutions For A Healthier Lifestyle in The New Year 2022

 new year resolutions

Take a healthier route this year with these new year resolutions.

Many of us make New Year Resolutions at the start of the year of a variety. Traveling to many locations, breaking a record, giving up social media, and tasting new foods every day are just a few examples.  However, the majority of us never achieve our objectives, and those who do, bravo! So, why not shake things up a little in 2022 and try making resolutions that sound more realistic and will result in several positive changes in your life? Try out these Resolutions for the new year and make your 2022 lifestyle healthier.

1. A Strict Sleep Schedule

Your first resolution for the year 2022 should be to get a better sleep schedule. Make time for at least 7 hours of sleep each night as it's the minimum requirement for a quality rest. Also try to sleep early and wake up early. This way, you will feel more fresh and energetic throughout the day. Give your new year a fresh start with this fresh activity everyday.

2. Make Fitness Priority

Fitness is an important part of having a healthy lifestyle, so make it a priority in 2021. Make a work out routine for everyday. Make a workout plan that you will follow every day. If you have a busy schedule, you can start with just 20 minutes every day at first. There are numerous fitness strategies you can do, such as yoga, going to the gym, doing a home workout and so on. Work out to feel good and not to be thinner. Work out for the sake of feeling good, not to lose weight. Instead of stressing over the number on the scale, focus on how great you feel since you started exercising.

3. More Moving And Less Sitting

Everybody likes sitting and relaxing, and the year with COVID-19 also didn't help the situation. However, just sitting makes us lazy and less productive. So to make the coming year productive, make a resolution to move around more and sit less. This task is not difficult, and it does not require you to give yourself a hard time by keeping you standing even when you are exhausted. Rather, take small steps like walking while talking on call, moving when listening to podcasts or music, and so on. Also, make it a habit to go for a walk after each meal.

4. More Home Cooked Meals

This year, eat more home-cooked meals. It will keep you healthy and, as an added bonus, will help you save money. It would be even better if you could learn to cook this year. Cooking food can be therapeutic, and you'll almost certainly end up with something tasty.

5. Be Kinder

Everyone believes they are kind, but this is not always the case when seen through others eyes. So make a New Year's resolution to be kinder to others. Do random acts of kindness and you'll feel another level of satisfaction.  Also, give one stranger a compliment every day, and you never know it might just make them feel a lot better. Be kind, spread happiness, and feel positivity on the inside.

On Our Way to the Promised Land

“On Our Way to The Promised Land”

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Thanks to our “Church By Phone” team’s generosity, I took an extra day off this week. I thought it might be a good idea to recharge a little, to be as ready as possible for whatever will be coming our way in the days ahead. Although the weather was not so good, I spent some time over in Manhattan, walking up and down the streets of a city that is certainly hurting, but I’m happy to say, it’s most definitely not a “ghost town.” On both days, I found dry spots where I could sit outside. So, while eating a slice of pizza or sipping a cup of coffee, I did some people watching, looking at everyone getting through the day, wondering what was on their minds, what invisible burdens they might be carrying.

The truth is that we’ve all picked up at least a few scars along the way. All of us carry our own personal regrets, hurts, and fears. We wonder about the roads not taken. We ache about the ways we have betrayed others, and we’re stung by how others have betrayed us. We worry about the future. What is yet to come?

And many of us bear the trauma of living in our deeply messed up society. Despite overflowing prosperity, so many have so little. We are armed to the teeth, making gun violence an inevitable fact of life and inspiring some to form “militias” ready and willing to preserve their white privilege and to act on bizarre conspiracy theories. There aren’t enough good-paying jobs, leading many to desperation and recklessness, convinced that there’s nothing left to lose. Our level of public discourse continues to sink to even lower depths. Many among us seem to have gotten tired of a deadly virus that we were never serious enough about in the first place. And, finally, we get daily reminders that some people in our country just don’t seem to matter very much at all.

The presidential election is undoubtedly critical, and the outcome may help us heal from some of this agony, but there will be no quick and easy fix.

So, how do we move forward, scars and all? How do we find healing in our hearts and in our community?

You may remember that in church this past Sunday we heard the story of the death of Moses. He was buried on the edge of the Promised Land. The leadership of Israel passed to Joshua, who will guide the people back to their ancestral homeland, bringing the long exodus to a close.

I’m sorry that we’ve reached the end of the exodus story because this ancient account of wilderness years speaks so clearly and powerfully to our time and the challenges ahead. The Israelites had left behind all that was familiar and were now in a seemingly endless in-between time, filled with dangers and fears, and with plenty of opportunities to make big mistakes. There were times that the people missed the past (even though it wasn’t so great back in Egypt). They grew hungry and thirsty and impatient. They gave into the ever-popular temptation of worshipping the gods of the world, choosing to be just like everybody else.

At the same time, Moses and his people learned about God. They received the law, which gave them a trusty roadmap for keeping their end of the covenant. They discovered that God would provide food to fill their groaning stomachs, but hoarding would only disappoint. For the Israelites, the suffering and the mistakes were painfully real. Yet, God never stopped pointing the way forward. And, as we’ve just done in church, the story of this long ago epic journey is told and celebrated to this day.

Unlike the Israelites, we are still somewhere in the middle of our wilderness journey. We are a mess. But, God is always pointing the way forward, reminding us of the power of prayer and the beauty of community. God is unsettling our consciences about the plight of the hundreds of children at the border who may never be reunited with their parents. God is uncovering the suffering in our old cities and towns (like Jersey City) where the good jobs have been moved elsewhere, without a thought for the loyal and skilled workers left behind. God is uncovering the injustice and brutality that have given Black people good reasons to mistrust the police and others in authority.

It can feel overwhelming to face these realities. Sometimes we may even miss the (often not so great) past. But, there’s no turning back.

Whatever our politics, we all know that next week may be quite difficult. As always, we’ll be praying for one another, our country, and for the whole world. On Election Day, in addition to our three “Church By Phone” services, we will gather on Zoom at 7:00 PM with our friends from Grace Van Vorst, knowing that Jesus is always present where two or three of us are gathered, even if it’s on the Internet.

So, in the days ahead, no matter what happens, we’ll stick together. We’ll continue to follow God’s lead. Scars and all, we are on our way to the Promised Land.

Best Kindle deals in 2021

When it comes to finding a device to use to read your ebooks, you have a few options to choose from. You can always buy a tablet or simply use your smartphone, but those devices are multipurpose and can be used for a ton of things, like surfing the web or doom-scrolling through Twitter. If you are looking for something to strictly read books, e-readers, while a niche piece of tech, is designed to store all of your books in a virtual library with no other functionality.

Amazon has dominated the space for years with its Kindle products. Right now, there are three Kindle models you can choose from, each with pros and cons.

Below, we’ve listed each of the current Kindles available for purchase. Sometimes, there isn’t a deal for one or, in some instances, all of the products. In that case, we’ve mentioned the most recent sale price so you know when is a good time to buy the e-reader at a discounted rate. But most of the time, there’s some deal going on. Whether you’re looking for a new model or to grab a bundle that includes a few extras, these are the best Kindle deals right now.

Kindle (10th Generation)

This is Amazon’s most affordable e-reader, usually costing $90. Released in 2019, this base Kindle model includes a front light, comes in one storage configuration of 8GB, and comes with or without ad support. Despite including the same 167ppi resolution as its predecessors, this model has a slightly higher contrast than earlier models.

Right now, you can buy the Kindle Essentials Bundle, which is $120 ($15 off its usual price), and it includes a printed cover and a power adapter.

Kindle Kids Edition (2019)

The entry-level Kindle and Oasis models were not the only ones that received a refresh in 2019, Amazon also announced and released a Kindle Kids Edition Bundle, which provides age-appropriate content for younger readers who prefer digital books for $109 ($20 more than the base Kindle).

The Kindle Kids Edition consists of five items: the device, a case, a two-year extended replacement guarantee (in the event the device breaks), and one year of Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited service. The latter is the biggest selling point of this device, as it allows parents to grant access to a digital library of kid-friendly books like Percy Jackson or The Hobbit at no additional cost.

Right now, Amazon is offering the Kindle Kids Edition Essentials Bundle, which is $128 and includes all of the things previously mentioned above, plus a power adapter.

Kindle Paperwhite (Fourth Generation)

Amazon released the fourth-generation Kindle Paperwhite in 2018. Starting at $130, the Paperwhite comes in three different configurations: 8GB Wi-Fi, 32GB Wi-Fi, and a second 32GB model that drops the ads from the lock screen.

The Paperwhite features a six-inch, pin-sharp backlit display, which is the main reason to get one over the base Kindle. The 2018 model added a few useful features normally found on Amazon’s flagship reader, the Oasis, such as water resistance and Audible audiobook support.

Amazon has knocked $20 off its Kindle Paperwhite Essentials Bundle, which includes either an 8GB or 32GB Paperwhite (with ads), plus a leather cover and a power adapter. If you are a fan of The Hunger Games book series, the e-commerce giant has four bundles that include the Paperwhite (with ads) and exclusive covers designed by the series’ author, plus a power adapter for $160 if you buy the 8GB or $190 if you buy the 32GB.

Kindle Oasis (Third Generation)

The Kindle Oasis is the most expensive of the lineup, starting at $250. The device comes in two storage configurations: 8GB or 32GB, and like the other models, you can get the product with or without ads.

The Kindle Oasis 2019 model looks very similar to its previous model. It still maintains its waterproof, seven-inch, 300ppi E Ink display and supports Audible audiobooks by connecting to Bluetooth. Yet, the biggest change to the Kindle Oasis 2019 is that it can adjust the color temperature to a yellow-toned display, making it easier to read at night.

In the past, we have seen the Kindle Oasis go down to as low as $200 if you get the 32GB model, which is the lowest it has ever been for that configuration to date. While there are no deals on just the Oasis itself, Amazon is currently offering an Essentials Bundle for $30 off its normal price. You can get either the 8GB or 32GB, and it will also include a leather cover, a power adapter, plus three months of Kindle Unlimited.

Study of People Finds Intriguing Link Between Iron Levels And Lifespan

By DAVID NIELD

A massive study published in 2020 found evidence that blood iron levels could play a role in influencing how long you live.

It's always important to take longevity studies with a big grain of salt, but the research was impressive in its breadth, covering genetic information from well over 1 million people across three public databases. It also focused on three key measures of ageing: lifespan, years lived free of disease (referred to as healthspan), and making it to an extremely old age (AKA longevity).

Throughout the analysis, 10 key regions of the genome were shown to be related to these measures of long life, as were gene sets linked to how the body metabolises iron.

Put simply, having too much iron in the blood appeared to be linked to an increased risk of dying earlier.

"We are very excited by these findings as they strongly suggest that high levels of iron in the blood reduces our healthy years of life, and keeping these levels in check could prevent age-related damage," said data analyst Paul Timmers, from the University of Edinburgh in the UK.

"We speculate that our findings on iron metabolism might also start to explain why very high levels of iron-rich red meat in the diet has been linked to age-related conditions such as heart disease."

While correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation, the researchers used a statistical technique called Mendelian randomisation to reduce bias and attempt to infer causation in the data.

As the researchers noted, genetics are thought to have around a 10 percent influence on lifespan and healthspan, and that can make it difficult to pick out the genes involved from all the other factors involved (like your smoking or drinking habits). With that in mind, one of the advantages of this new study is its sheer size and scope.

Five of the genetic markers the researchers found had not previously been highlighted as significant at the genome-wide level. Some, including APOE and FOXO3, have been singled out in the past as being important to the ageing process and human health.

"It is clear from the association of age-related diseases and the well-known ageing loci APOE and FOXO3 that we are capturing the human ageing process to some extent," wrote the researchers in their paper published in July 2020.

While we're still in the early stages for investigating this association with iron metabolism, further down the line we could see the development of drugs designed to lower the levels of iron in the blood - which could potentially add extra years to our lives.

Besides genetics, blood iron is mostly controlled by diet and has already been linked to a number of age-related diseases, including Parkinson's and liver disease. It also affects our body's ability to fight off infection as we get older.

We can add this latest study to the growing evidence that 'iron overload', or not being able to break it down properly, can have an influence on how long we're likely to live, as well as how healthy we're likely to be in our later years.

"Our ultimate aim is to discover how ageing is regulated and find ways to increase health during ageing," says Joris Deelen who studies the biology of ageing at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Germany.

"The 10 regions of the genome we have discovered that are linked to lifespan, healthspan, and longevity are all exciting candidates for further studies."

The research has been published in Nature Communications.

Comedy Central, MTV and more are coming to Hulu’s live TV service

By Kris Holt

Subscribers to Hulu's live TV service are about to get more bang for their buck. Under an expanded distribution deal, 14 more ViacomCBS cable networks are on the way to Hulu + Live TV in the form of BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, VH1, CMT, Nick Jr., TV Land, BET Her, MTV2, NickToons, TeenNick and MTV Classic.

CBS, CBS Sports Network, the CW, the Smithsonian Channel and Pop TV will remain on Hulu + Live TV as part of the deal. The multi-year agreement ensures you'll still be able to add Showtime as a premium option too.

“We are excited to have reached an expanded agreement with Hulu that underscores the value of our powerful portfolio of brands to next-generation TV platforms and viewers,” Ray Hopkins, ViacomCBS’ president of US networks distribution, said in a statement. “Hulu continues to be a great partner, and this agreement ensures that Hulu + Live TV subscribers are now able to enjoy the full breadth of our leading content across news, sports and entertainment for the first time.”

Disney reported in November that Hulu + Live TV had 4.1 million subscribers, more than rival streaming TV services like YouTube TV and Sling TV, as Variety notes. The price of a Hulu + Live TV monthly plan rose by $10 to $65 (or $71 for the "no ads" version) in December.

ViacomCBS has its own streaming platforms, including Showtime and CBS All Access. It's rebranding the latter as Paramount+. Several ViacomCBS networks are also available on YouTube TV.
